ART: VISUAL & PERFORMING

Art Studio 

• Feb. 6 – May 7
• Thursdays, 2:30-3:30 pm – Schedule change to Thursday for Spring!

In this class, students of all artistic skill levels will explore using art as a way to express themselves and their unique ideas. Students will be given the opportunity to practice new techniques, learn a wide range of art media, and show off their own artistic styles. Through exposure to a diverse range of artists and methods, students will enrich personal identity and evoke deep critical thinking about art and life. Art history, terminology, aesthetics, and discussion methods will be studied throughout this course. Spring offering, 25 seats. Fall students must re-apply.

Beginning Band 

• Sept. 17 – Dec. 17 and Feb. 4 – May 12, Full-Year Program
• Tuesdays, 1:30 – 2:30 pm

Will include an intro to reading music and a small semester-ending performance of simple pieces. Instruments will be provided for in-class rehearsal. Volunteer parents to assist gratefully appreciated. Enrollment priority given to 6th graders; enrollment priority may be given to students from Roosevelt’s 2019 summer music camp. No experience necessary. Year round offering, not open for Spring Enrollment. Current students need not re-apply. Please note one extra week to prepare for performance the week of 5/12.

Hip-Hop Dance

This exciting and fast paced dance class will leave you feeling fresh!  Don’t be intimidated…great for boys and girls in this high-energy dance class that will definitely have you movin’ to the beats! Let loose while developing musicality, confidence, coordination, and creativity. This class is great for those who want to enhance their hip hop groove. All music and moves are age appropriate.  No experience necessary. Fall & Spring offerings, 20 seats. Fall students must re-apply for Spring session.

Improv with Diversionary Theater

Our neighborhood theater is excited to present your very own improv theatre club where you can be loud, be yourself… or be someone else! Every Tuesday, we will be working as a group building our improv theatre skills, increasing self-expression, story-telling, collaboration and creativity. Using improv, physical comedy, and movement, you’ll get a taste of what’s possible when there is no script. A finale presentation for friends and family will be held on the last day of class! Fall offering only, 15 seats.

Photography with the Museum of Photographic Arts

• Sept. 17 – Dec. 17, Fall session only
• Tuesdays, 1:30-3:30 pm

This program is generously funded, organized, and taught by the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts and includes a visit to MOPA! Explore image-making with the Museum of Photographic Arts and experiment with various photographic techniques and learn to express your ideas visually. Cameras are provided. Enrollment priority will be given to students who have not previously taken Photography with MOPA. Fall offering only, no spring session, 20 seats.

Roosevelt Theatre Company

Upcycling Design Lab

• Sept. 18 – Dec. 18, Fall session only

Join Upcycling Design Lab and learn how to repurpose existing materials by creating useful and beautiful objects. We’ll propagate succulents and plant them into upcycled pots; recycle old paper to make new paper, cards, and piñatas; use found objects to create wind chimes, kites, and more! Fall offering, 25 seats.

COMMUNITY & IDENTITY 

Classic Movie Reviews

• Sept. 18 – Dec. 18 and Feb. 5 – May 6, Full-Year Program

This club will focus on exposing students to classic American films based on the American Film Institute’s Top 100. Students will watch, reflect, and analyze films that have left a huge impact on American society and are beneficial to know to be more culturally aware. Students will learn the basics of film and film history, followed by watching and discussing a variety of classics including Star Wars Episode IV, E.T., and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. All watched films will be G or PG rated. Students will also write film reviews, which will have the opportunity to be included in the Roughrider News. Year round offering, 5 open seats available for Spring. Current students need not re-apply.

Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA)

Roosevelt’s GSA is a student-led club that promotes equality and diversity among all students regardless of their gender and sexuality. Our club also provides a safe space for our LGBT+ students. In addition, students are engaged in current issues regarding LGBT+ as well as open and educational discussions among students. GSA club also gets involved in our school activities, and District-approved community events such as the San Diego Pride Parade, Safe-School Summit, GLSEN events, etc. Year round offering. Any student is welcome to join the GSA club at any time, no limit on seats. Current students need not re-apply.

Junior Model United Nations (JMUN)

• Sept. 19 – Dec. 19 and Feb. 6 – May 21, Full-Year Program
• Thursdays, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
• Leader: Mr. Cortes

In Junior Model United Nations, students will assume the roles of ambassadors of specific countries and research issues and write proposals for those countries throughout the year. In May, they will represent their countries in various committees with real-world problems and issues at a two-day end of year conference with other schools on May 27 and 28. At this conference, students will make speeches, debate, create and vote on proposals and counter-proposals; they will have to make quick decisions as they negotiate with other ambassadors. Classes will be once a week until mid-spring, adding a mandatory second hour for the last 8 weeks of the program; students will be expected to attend and participate in the two-day JMUN conference in the spring, typically late May. Year round offering, not open for Spring Enrollment. Current students need not re-apply. Please note extra weeks to prepare for the JMUN Conference on May 27 and 28.

SCIENCE & NATURE 

Garden Club

• Sept. 16 – Dec. 19 and Feb. 3 – May 7, Full-Year Program
• 2 sessions: Mondays 2:30 – 4:00 pm, or Thursdays 2:30 – 4:00 p.m.

Garden is offered in two separate sessions, a Monday class and a Thursday class. Priority is to have as many different students participate in Garden as possible. Come get your hands dirty and gain an appreciation for how to create a sustainable environment. Between our raised beds, the greenhouse and our budding orchard. We are so fortunate to have a living laboratory to demonstrate to our community eco-friendly low input methods to the Roosevelt community for sustainable food production, home energy conservation, reduced global footprint, healthy food for students, and opportunities for participating in the emerging green, local economy. Club will enjoy garden inspired snacks and do monthly (as food is available) farm stands. There will also be opportunities to help do outreach with garden produce at school events. Priority enrollment will be to give as many different students access to garden as possible. Year round offering, Monday 4 seats open in Spring, Thursday 6 seats open in Spring. Current students need not re-apply.  

Girls in Science with the San Diego Zoo

• Girls in Science Application (mandatory)

The Girls in Science program is a partnership with the San Diego Zoo and participants will make regular trips to the zoo. While at the San Diego Zoo and here at Roosevelt, members learn about topics such as habitat conservation, ecosystems, and animal life cycles from women working in various capacities at the zoo. Year round offering. All applicants must submit a separate Girls in Science application to complete in addition to the After-School Enrichment Activities online form. Places in the class will only be awarded to students who have completed both the online ASE application and completed the separate Girls in Science application. 3 open seats available in Spring, must submit additional Girls in Science application as well as ASE application. Current students need not re-apply.

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)

• Sept. 18 – Dec. 19 and Feb. 5 – May 7, Full-Year Program
• Wednesdays & Thursdays, 2:30 – 3:30 pm

Attendance on both Wednesdays and Thursdays required for enrollment. Come to MESA and build engineering and/or science projects for competitions at SDSU. Roosevelt International Middle School has consistently won regional and state awards. Sample projects include mouse trap cars, model of the eye, popsicle stick bridges, and others. Students can advance to the state and national level. Students must attend both Wednesdays and Thursdays. Enrollment priority may be given to previous students, but a number of new student spaces are guaranteed. New students encouraged to apply; previous enrollment does not guarantee placement. Year round offering, 5 seats open in Spring. Current students need not re-apply.

Minecraft Coding – NEW!

Minecraft is an open-world game that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive environment where the only limit is your imagination. Create your environments and tools that will help you strategize, survive, and explore.  Come and build your own virtual worlds, learn coding, math, history, geography and civil engineering and have a bunch of fun doing it. Spring offering, 25 seats.

SERVICE

Cesar Chavez Service Club

The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs provide leadership development programs in schools across San Diego County, building confidence, competence, and a sense of community within young people. Club members, called “Chavistas,” meet weekly at their school and plan and carry out service projects to benefit the communities where they live. Through teaching the ten values Cesar Chavez embodied, the Clubs work to inspire students to believe in themselves and to learn through the Club experiences that they can make a lasting difference in our world. Each club votes on service projects they would like to work on. Any student is welcome to join. Year round offering, not open for Spring Enrollment. Current students need not re-apply.

No Place for Hate – CANCELLED DUE TO LOW DEMAND

• 9/19/19 – 12/19/19, Spring TBD, full-year program

The No Place for Hate group is a group of students who work together to create a more inclusive school. How do we do this? By exploring the needs of the school and create opportunities for discussion and working together. Our club will design at least 4 different all school activities that will work to prevent bullying and create a better school culture. Students will have the opportunity to attend ADL’s anti-bias student training in La Jolla in October, dates TBD. This is a great opportunity for all students. Additionally, 8th grade students can use this as their 8th-grade community project. Some enrollment priority seats may be given to 8th graders. Year round offering, 36 seats.

SPORTS & GAMES 

Running Club – NEW!

• Feb. 5 – May 6, Spring session
• Wednesdays, 2:30 – 3:30 pm
• Leader: Coach Sand

Get out and run each Wednesday with Coach Sand! We’ll track the number of laps and miles you run, and attempt to improve your mile time or overall endurance. Students will be encouraged to come participate with their families in optional weekend running events as part of a Roosevelt team. Spring offering, 30 seats.

Strategic Games

• Sept. 19 – Dec. 19 and Feb. 6 – May 7, Full-Year Program
• Thursdays, 2:30 – 3:30 pm
• Leader: Mr. Runyan

Strategic games are beneficial for the development of critical thinking, interpersonal, and problem solving skills. The students will be given the opportunity to learn Go, chess, Life, backgammon, cribbage, checkers, Sorry, Battleship, Monopoly etc. In addition, the students will have the special opportunity to learn the ancient Chinese strategy game Go from a local expert. Students may bring their own strategic games in order to teach other students and compete in tournaments. Year round offering, 5 open seats available for Spring. Current students need not re-apply.

Middle School Sports (MSPAL)

• Dates: TBD
• Multiple days, 2:30 – 5:00 pm (Includes Snack and Homework Time), On Game Days the end time will vary.
• Leader: PrimeTime Coach

Middle schools participating in MSPAL include other PrimeTime programs, and various charter and private schools throughout the county. Practices and games will vary on league transportation needs. Contact PrimeTime to find out how to join these activities.
