IB Enrichment Programs Supported by Friends of Roosevelt – 2016-2017

Garden Program, Annual Cost:  $16,000

Our gardens at RMS foster a principled, caring, and cohesive culture that values the sustainability of our natural environment and its relationship with the school and community. Our goal is to establish a living laboratory for the development of our individual sense of self, our relationship with nature, our community and our world.  The integration of the living laboratory into the RMS curriculum demonstrates how, through eco-friendly low input methods we can address sustainable food production, home conservation, reduced global footprint, healthy food for students, and opportunities for participating in the emerging green, local economy.
Costs include: demonstration lessons from local gardeners and farmers working side by side with students and teachers.  Supplies for seasonal planting, including, but not limited to soil, seeds and seedlings, irrigation, trellising, garden boxes, fertilizers, and garden tools.  Professional development and curriculum writing time for teachers to plan for meaningful connections to the IB curriculum.

Zoo Expeditionary Learning Program (ZELP), Annual Cost:  $11,000

The ZELP program is an opportunity for 7th grade students to have hands on experiences in the classroom and behind the scenes at the San Diego Zoo.  The focus of the 7th grade science curriculum is within the life sciences.  Students learn about animal and plant adaptations.
Costs include: printing and binding of student science field journals, zoo educator labor for over 200 hours of instruction in the classroom with students, zookeeper and horticulture staff labor on the dates of expeditionary learning, administrative costs for organizing and facilitating the program, science equipment and plants for student investigations.

Student Planners, Annual Cost:  $4,000

Student planners are an integral part of the RMS IB program.  This planner contains the vision and mission of the school, as well as, key concepts of the IB program for student to reference including the learner profiles and approaches to learning.  The planners are utilized on a daily basis all subjects as a tool for students to document their learning and organize their learning plan.
Costs include:  printing and shipping for student planners.

Peace One Day, Annual Cost:  $5,000

Peace One Day’s objective is to institutionalize Peace Day 21 September, making it a day that is self-sustaining, an annual day of global unity, a day of intercultural cooperation on a scale that humanity has never known.  RMS students, teachers, and community participate in this event annually as a community building opportunity and to promote the vision of the IB program.
Costs include: t-shirts for every student, staff and volunteer, supplies for art activities, and media outreach such as fliers and video production.

Visual and Performing Arts Integration, Annual Cost: $21,000

Students will experience high quality arts opportunities in visual, performing and media arts.  Partnerships with the Timken Museum, Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) and La Jolla Playhouse support visual and performing arts integration in History classes for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Teacher educators from these organizations work hand in hand with Roosevelt teachers planning and writing curriculum to integrate the arts and history. Teachers implement rigorous arts integration strategies in partnership with teaching artists in their classrooms improving student academic achievement, student engagement, and school climate.  Arts integration supports literacy, math, and science strategies aligned with Common Core State Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards.
Costs include: Classroom teacher and Artist planning time, teaching artist planning time and 250 hours Art educator labor and purchase of consumable art supplies.

Spanish/French, Annual Cost:  $6,000

This sequential series of yearlong courses for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders supports the acquisition and development of Spanish and/or French Languages is designed to prepare students to enter the rigorous International Baccalaureate High School Diploma program at Mission Bay or San Diego International Studies High Schools. Each course is a one-period, balanced literacy course that intended to provide students with the skills necessary to become independent critical readers, writers, listeners, and speakers, and to develop appreciation and understanding of the histories and cultures of the target language. Students in this course also will expand their knowledge of grammatical concepts and applications.
Costs include: refresh of current language resource materials and teacher professional development.

Band/Orchestra, Annual Cost:  $3,000

Opportunities for students to participate in the band and orchestra program at RMS is integral to the IB curriculum.  Students are required to participate in the visual and performing arts each year of the MYP.  While band and orchestra are only offered for the 7th and 8th graders, 6th graders are exposed to the arts throughout the school year through interdisciplinary projects.
Costs include: new instrument purchases, instrument repair and maintenance costs, sheet music, and music stands.  Additionally, field trip admission fees to local music performances and transportation costs associated with field trips and community performances off-site.

Gateway to Technology GT), Annual Cost:  $8,000

The project-based aspects of the Project Lead The Way curriculum give students a chance to apply what they know, identify a problem, find unique solutions, and lead their own learning. PLTW courses are aligned with Common Core State Standards in math and English Language Arts, Next Generation Science Standards, and other national and state standards.  RMS students at grades 7th and 8th participate in the PLTW curriculum as an elective for two semesters.  The PLTW curriculum supports the RMS effort to meet the IB requirement that students engage in 50 hours of Design curriculum annually as part of the MYP experience.
Costs include: consumable supplies for building and construction, robotics replacement parts, annual software license for AutoCad Design, annual teacher training.
