Message from Susan Barndollar
Executive Director of Nursing & Wellness
San Diego Unified School District:

“Several schools in San Diego County are experiencing a high number of absences likely due to Influenza, also known as the flu. Typical signs and symptoms of the flu include cough, sore throat, runny nose, fever, and other upper respiratory infection symptoms.

The district, in collaboration with the San Diego County Department of Public Health, recommend the following actions to protect yourself and help prevent spread:

  • Get a flu shot
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Wash hands frequently
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Rule out COVID – Take a COVID test
  • Avoid close contact with ill persons

Voluntary masking can help prevent many respiratory infections aside from COVID, like the flu. The influenza vaccine is available at doctors’ offices and retail pharmacies and is covered by medical insurance. People with no health care coverage can get vaccinated at one of the County’s six public health centers or a local community clinic. To find the nearest location, visit the County’s Flu Vaccine Locations page or call 2-1-1 San Diego.

More information on the flu and tips to stay healthy can be found on the County Health and Human Services website.”
