Dear RMS Parents,
I am a parent at Roosevelt and reaching out to parents and teachers regarding a grassroots initiative to “green” the school food. I am part of a committee that has formed over the past few weeks to gain some traction on this initiative.
Our initiative is inspired by Oakland USD, which greened its school food in 2012, increasing the plant content and decreasing animal products. The result was healthier food and a decrease in both carbon footprint and water usage. The district also saved money and the students like their healthier options.
So far, our initiative has been embraced by the McKinley Wellness Committee. We have also joined forces with San Diego 350, an environmental group. Changing the school food is an immense undertaking, so we want as much support as possible.
We have a meeting coming up on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 6:00 PM at Anthem Restaurant, 2611 El Cajon Blvd. We are inviting parents from other schools. So far, we have some from McKinley and Roosevelt, and it looks like we might have some from Birney as well.
In case you have the time, I have attached info on the Oakland USD initiative.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Go green!

Hi, I am a parent and PTO board member at Golden Hill K-8. We would love to join this initiative and we are sharing this information with the school’s Wellness Committee. I cannot make the meeting tonight, but I would appreciate being forwarded any information from the meeting or in the future. Thanks!
